The Sacraments
Catholics enjoy all the gifts that God left His Church in Jesus Christ. Regrettably some Christians repudiated the gift of the Sacraments in the course of the Protestant movement that arose in Europe in the 16 th Century.
Those who no longer embraced the sacraments simply were unable to accept the wondrous, ineffable and full reality of the Incarnation and all that flowed from it. The Word truly was made flesh so that men could now forgive others with the power of Jesus Christ Himself, bread and wine would be changed into the actual Body and Blood of Christ, ordinary men, women and children could be lifted up higher than the angels themselves and taken into the life of the Trinity by being made one with the God-Man Jesus Christ in baptism.
Everything that is truly distinctive about the Christian Church – the Communion of Saints and their intercession for us, the hierarchical structure of the Church seen in Bishops, Priests and Deacons, the power of the sacraments, the mediating role of Mary – all flow from the incomprehensible mystery of the Word made flesh. It is a truth, a wonder, a mystery that for some people was simply too good to be true.
