Spanish Immersion for Priests, Seminarians and Religious

June 9 - July 21, 2007

Six weeks of total immersion in Spanish language and Hispanic culture in Puebla, Mexico.

The purpose of this program is to provide Catholic priests, seminarians and religious with the language skills and cultural sensitivities to minister effectively to Spanish-speaking Catholics.

Students will be grouped according to their knowledge of Spanish in classes of no more then eight. The language instruction is provided by the Instituto Anglo-Americano. Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Puebla will provide tutoring in conversation and writing.  Lectures will be provided by the Catholic Universidad Popular y Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP).

There will be cultural tours consisting of historical, art and architectural excursions which will take place in and around Puebla. There will also be tours to Cholula, Mexico City, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and monasteries dating from the time of the initial evangelization.

There is a growing need for spanish-speaking ministry. The majority of Catholics in the United States will soon be Spanish-speaking. After Census 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that by the year 2050, one of every four Americans (24.5%) will be Hispanic/Latinos. In fact, Hispanic/Latinos are already the largest minority in the United States with a population larger than all of Canada.

The Church in the U.S., as is her custom, will minister to these Christians in their native tongue and with respect for the traditions they bring with them from Latin America.
