Lecture on the Eastern Churches: The Past and The Present
TIME:
March 13, 2009 7:30 PM
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Speaker: Monsignor Archimandrite Robert L. Stern We Roman Catholics are not alone in the Catholic World! There are Maronite and Copitc and Armenian and Syro-Malabar and Macedonian Catholics, to name just a few. Their rites developed in their own historical and cultural uniqueness with all the richness, color and sounds of ancient peoples. The Maronites still pray the Our Father in the Aramaic of Jesus Himself! But despite appearances, we are all Catholic. We will explore this fascinating and often unknown dimension of the Catholic Church on Friday, March 13. This lecture will enable us to respond even now to John Paul II of Blessed Memory who urged us to breathe with both lungs of the Church – East and West.
Msgr. Archimandrite Robert L. Stern will speak at Ivy Hall on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. on the “Origin of the Ecclesiastical Species”, picking up on all the current attention being given to Charles Darwin on the 150th anniversary of his publishing Origin of the Species. (The topic of Darwin and his work was addressed most admirably at Ivy Hall from a Catholic perspective by Tim Murnane in his presentation on “Intelligent Design” on February 13.) Monsignor Stern is the Secretary General of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) which grew out of the efforts of Pope Benedict XV and Pope Pius XI to bring relief to Christians in Russia and other eastern regions in the aftermath of World War I. It is a special agency of the Holy See established formally by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and placed under the presidency of the Archbishop of New York. It seeks to provide material and moral support to the Catholic in the Near East. As Monsignor explains how these churches developed he will also discuss the current difficult situation in which many Catholics find themselves today. Catholics go back to the very origins of the Church in Iraq and Palestine, for example, and they have suffered terribly under Islamic rule. Attending this lecture and supporting the CNEWA are small ways in which we can express our solidarity with our Catholic brothers and sisters in the Middle and Near East. NOTA BENE: I would strongly encourage you to read and reflect on the brief meditation from Msgr. Stern. It makes for excellent Lenten reading!!
